Outlook Inn

Known over the years by many names, including Eastsound Hotel, Eastsound House, Mt. Constitution Inn, and the Beach Hotel, today this charming house is known as the Outlook Inn. Built in the late 1800s by Charles Shattuck, the Inn began its life as sort of general store. Shattuck, a former gold miner turned hunter, sold all manner of goods at his shop and it became the hub of the town. It was the post office, the local jail was out back, and Shattuck even provided dental, barber, and farrier services out of his shop.

The next owner, Walter Sutherland, and his son, Luther Sutherland, expanded and remodeled the shop into a sprawling 22 room hotel. They called their hotel Eastsound House and it enjoyed years of success thanks to growing tourism on Orcas Island. The house went through several hands before it was bought by Ida Baker. Unfortunately for Baker the success didn’t last. By the 1920s the business had failed.

The house was revitalized in the 1940s by new owners who renamed it the Outlook Inn. It was renovated again in the 60s by a non-profit organization. New additions and suites were added in the 80s and 90s. Today the Outlook Inn is known for its beautiful views, comfortable rooms, and tasty meals.
